The title of today’s quick news post was actually the question that was running through my mind today.
I was doing a random Google search of a few series that I wanted to see if they were still around to purchase. Both series in question where distributed in the North American region through ADV Films back in the late 90’s to the early 00’s. Those who follow video/DVD distribution of Japanese anime during that time period remember that ADV Films was one of the largest in the game. For some reason before the turn of the current decade, they’ve been quiet. Until now…..
When I followed the URL for their site, I was welcomed with this…. a redesign of the company logo and what appears to be a digital countdown, as well as the ominous contact form…..
An article on wikipedia, helped me refresh my memory of the company’s history. ADV Films didn’t so much as disappear but when through a rebranding and restructuring process. For all intends and purposes it appears they are still around, in its varying guises including: Maiden Japan, Section 23, Sentai Filmworks, etc. ADV Films was responsible for bringing the very popular to this day title, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
So, what does this all mean? Well, your guess is as good as mine. But stay tuned. This could get interesting…..
